As a beginner, my first MIDI controller was the KeyLab Essential 88 Mk3, a full-sized keyboard that offered versatility and ease of use. I chose this model because I wanted a controller to bridge the gap between beginner-friendly features and long-term usability. Here’s what I experienced:

    • Additionally, users may need a sturdy laptop stand, monitor speakers for accurate sound monitoring, and even an extra monitor for a more streamlined workflow. This makes it less ideal for producers who need a portable setup but excellent for those building a home studio.

• Price Considerations—The KeyLab Essential 88 Mk3 is priced around ₱15,400 to ₱28,950, depending on the retailer. While it isn’t the cheapest MIDI controller available, it does offer great value for money, considering its build quality, software bundle, and versatility. If you’re on a tight budget, it’s a viable option to consider.
• Advanced Customization Can Be Overwhelming—While the keyboard offers customization through Arturia’s MIDI Control Center, beginners may need time to grasp its capabilities fully.
• Beginners Treating MIDI Keyboard as a Classical Piano – It’s Not – Many beginners come from a traditional piano background and expect a MIDI controller to behave the same way. However, unlike a classical piano, a MIDI keyboard does not generate sound independently. Instead, it controls virtual instruments within a DAW. Dynamics, articulation, and expression work differently since velocity, MIDI CC controls and automation play crucial roles. Understanding that a MIDI keyboard is a tool for controlling digital sounds rather than an acoustic instrument is essential for making the most of it in music production.

Are Arturia Products Beginner-Friendly?

After spending time with Arturia gear, I’d say yes, but with some effort required. Here’s why:

Where Beginners Might Struggle:

• Advanced Features Can Be Overwhelming – You’ll need to learn if you want to go beyond presets and create custom sounds.
• No Onboard Sounds – Unlike standalone keyboards or grooveboxes, Arturia’s MIDI controllers require a computer to function.
• Some DAWs Need Extra Setup – While Ableton and Logic Pro integrate well, other DAWs might require additional mapping.

Which Arturia Gear is Best for Beginners?

If you’re new to music production and want to try Arturia, here are some beginner-friendly options:

Final Thoughts: Is Arturia a Good Choice for Beginners?
